Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: Term 3 – 2023-24

During term 3 both the Student Council and the Diversity   Ambassadors met regularly to continue to work together to promote a respectful and inclusive school community.

The Student Council focused their efforts on:

  • preparing a series of tutor time activities on ‘conflict resolution’ and developing ‘positive allyship’ to help their peers with friendship issues and educate against discrimination. We are planning to run these activities in March.

The Diversity Ambassadors worked on:

  • the next events in our calendar
  • organising our Student Forum on ‘raising awareness about disabilities’ on 1st February which was attended by students across KS3 and KS4. It was humbling to listen to the students about their experiences and thoughts on the matter – the audience was attentive and respectful which made the conversation flow.

Zara also produced a tutor time activity to encourage students to consider & challenge the stereotypes, promote greater awareness about what it is like to have a disability.

All staff attended, on 9th February, a whole day of CPD on diversity to promote inclusion, equity and belonging in our school community based on student voice from last academic year as well as this year. Guided by our students’ feedback, many colleagues ledworkshops on the following topics: visible & hidden disabilities, teaching EAL students, all race matters, our LGBTQ+ family, exploring our use of language.

I am grateful to all of the staff who delivered these workshops: Mrs Jenkins, Mrs Acheson, Mrs Chambers-Smith, Mr Belver, Mr White.
