Year 8 STEM in a Box by BAE Systems

Last week, BAE Systems, Rochester inspired our Year 8 students to pursue Engineering careers with their two-day workshop on STEM in a Box. In this hands-on activity, each team of students assembled a small prototype for a car, produced the code to control the speed of this vehicle using a Micro:bit and then raced the car against other teams using a remote control.

They also learnt about the nature of work in BAE Systems and paths to pursue a career in STEM.

Here is a glimpse from the workshop.

Feedback from the students

I really enjoyed it, as it was a different, fun and more interactive way of learning. I also think that we should have more workshops like this about a specific career so we can learn more about the job and what we would like to do in the future.”

“I learnt about programming and how you can use basic coding to do a lot of things.”

“It’s more simple than you think to make the car move when given the right equipment.”
